Borås – Where Fashion is Happening

It all started during the last two centuries where many wealthy peasants came to Borås for the trading of textile products, making this vibrant textile city one of Sweden’s fastest growing cities in the middle of the 20th century.  The textile legacy remains today, most notably for textile innovations. In Borås, Fashion also integrates with Street Art. Over 300 new students in The Swedish School of Textiles, including myself, was part of the NoLimit Street Art in Borås, the first street art curated in Sweden, along with many renowned graffiti artists. The goal was to create an outfit per group using only secondhand garments within a certain time, precisely like Project Runway. I have no prior design/textiles knowledge but it was such a great pleasure to work with students from a diversity of backgrounds to create the outfit from scratch – sketching, sewing, marketing, photoshoot, blogging etc. The final collection was presented during the runway show and it was also part of the art installation for NoLimt.  It was a really long but  truly satisfying day. Check out behind the scenes photos and clips of the runway here. A toast to Street Art and Upcycling Fashion!

    Hi Angelina,
Thank you for giving us such a nice insight in studying and living in Sweden.
I am currently applying for the Textile Management –specialization in Fashion Marketing and Management course in Boras.
I hold a bachelors degree in Fashion Management and have done some fashion related internships nevertheless I’m a bit worried about not being able to get into the program as it says on the Boras University website they only have 10 places.
I have started my application process over the university admission website but no where did it say I could submit a motivational letter.
    Where did you submit yours?
It seems like such a letter could give who ever is in charge of choosing the applicants a much better idea of why they should choose me so I would really like to be able to submit one.

    Thanks and regards

      Hi Marie,

There have been some minor changes to the application process. When I applied to this program in 2014, it is mandatory to submit a motivational letter. I submitted my motivational letter during the application process. However, this is no longer essential. If you would like to write a motivational letter, go for it 🙂

All the best to your application!

    Hi Angelina,

I am currently doing my bachelor degree in Finance, and find the textile management program at this school really interesting. I personally do photography, writing and digital media design a lot. Also, I do take some social science/humanities/literature/music classes in college , but I am not sure if the school will ever consider me by just looking at my college transcript without requiring me to submit a motivation letter. Do you have any advice on what I should work on for this application?

Anyway, what did you study for your bachelor degree?

I look forward to your reply. Thank you.

    Regards,
    Bo

      Hi Bo,

Similarly to you, I have a bachelor degree in finance. I do not have any prior fashion, design or textile background or work experiences. However, that is not required for the management program. Don’t worry, they will definitely look at your transcript. Besides, you seem to have more relevant experience such as in digital media than I do which is great. If you are interested in applying, I would suggest you to submit the application along with a motivation letter which I did. This may facilitate the application process and it is a good way to highlight your interests, skills, experiences, and motivations.

Do feel free to ask me if you need any more information. All the best!
