Student Perks in Sweden

Being a student in Sweden has many perks! Students can get rebates and discounts on books, electronics, apparel, food, travels and more. Mecenat is a student card that offers student rebates. For full-time students without the Mecenat card or would like another student card, you can sign up for Studentkortet, a FREE student card with many discounts. If you have a Swedish personal number, you can simply apply online. Otherwise, contact and apply through the English speaking customer service staff. All the rebate categories can be found here on the left. Hurrah to student discount with Swebus and SJ and the 20% off takeaways from Espresso House, one of my favorite cafes. Whenever you shop, dine or travel, don’t forget to use the student discounts.

Buying coursebooks in Sweden can be costly and student discounts can be handy. Also, check out the sales of secondhand coursebooks in the school or online such as Kurslitteratur. The major online books retailers in Sweden are Adlibris, Bokus, CDON. Always compare the prices from the websites and take note of the delivery time and shipping/return costs. The cost of my textbook is completely different in all the above websites with a nett difference of 80kr or 8€, sometimes more. PriceRunner can be a useful guide in price comparison of a particular item across different retailers. Some restaurants and retailers may offer student discounts which are not listed in the student cards. For instance, Komplett offers 10% student discounts on electronics merchandise. A quick goggle on the ‘rabattkod’ (rebate code) may save you some bucks.

For students with the Swedish personal identity number (personnummer), you can sign up as a club member with various retailers for FREE in stores such as Åhlens, Stadium, Kappahl, Lindex, HM and many more. Perks include promotions, discounts, bonus points and member-only events. Don’t forget to read the T&Cs. Happy shopping!
