The Secret Garden of Lund

Even a small town like Lund can prove to be exciting and secretive. If you want it to be.

On a sunny spring day in Lund one can even start thinking that the dark, long winter was worth it. The beauty of nature waking up and flowers blossoming everywhere overwhelms you. Add sunshine and you’re as happy as you can be.

Sometimes it takes some bonding with nature in order to recharge and reboot. In big cities, that particular unpolluted patch of land could be a challenge to find. Even though Lund is only a town, sometimes it feels one cannot escape its rhythm.

I wasn’t looking, but it found me: a cute, quaint community garden “Täppan.” Or as I call it The Secret Garden of Lund.

Täppan has existed for one hundred years now, hidden in plain sight. Few people know about it, and they’re usually the older residents. International students, I imagine, rarely come in contact with this colourful patch of land in the middle of Lund.

The beautiful thing about Täppan is that it is open for visits from May until August each year, when the plants look their best and when the sound of gravel under your feet becomes music to your ears and smell of thousands of flower species replaces the usual city air.

It was interesting to see some allotments groomed to perfection, with patio furniture calling for a family picnic and some, on the other hand, going on the wild side, with long weeds and a rustic feel to them.

The things I found cutest about Täppan were the little gates to each allotment.

Here’s a couple of examples:

It’s a great place for unwinding while strolling through the little streets between allotments, respectfully silent.

You can occasionally stumble upon a smiling gardener working on their landscaping with a straw hat and gardening tools in each hand. Don’t forget to say Hej.
