Uppsala University is the first university in Sweden, being the oldest one among the Nordic countries. The university is considered medieval and grew out of an ecclestical center, as most of them. Since it was a very busy trade region, it was the perfect place to build a university with the four traditional faculties of theology, law, medicine and philosophy. Uppsala University was founded in 1477 and you should keep that year in mind.
According to history, Brazil was “discovered” by the Portuguese in 1500 by the explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral that claimed the area for the Portugal Empire and gave the land a name. This means that while one of the best universities in the world was being founded, the land named Brazil, as we know now, was my age right now (23 hehe). Of course, we had lots of tribal nations living there, that found the land before the Portuguese, so it is not like there was none there. But it’s weird to think that while Uppsala University was being constructed, Brazil didn’t have any building at all. And when it comes to universities, Brazil had some specialized schools in 1792, but the first real Brazilian university is from 1909! This does not mean that one country is better than the other, just means that one of them is (a lot) older.
This is one of the best things about studying abroad. Especially in Sweden 😉 that is a country full of amazing stories and historic moments, cities and buildings. You’re not only going to study in one of the best places to live, but also experience a country that exists for a really long time and has a lot of stories to tell you.
