Vacations on a budget-Riga

It is no secret that living in Stockholm can be expensive as compared to other places in Sweden. The food, the transport, the general cost of living is quite high in comparison. So, as a student, you need to plan your budget and shop smartly. However, there is one field where living in Stockholm doesn’t prove to be expensive, and that is, the opportunity of travelling to different places around Stockholm, but more specifically to other Scandinavian countries!

We live in a generation where our love for travelling is universal. We work hard, study hard, and we should be able to take a break once in a while and travel. Traveling is a wonderful thing. It’s good to uproot and travel. It teaches us to be more grounded, it teaches us different cultures, it puts life in perspective, it takes us away from the mundanity of daily life. Whatever the reasons maybe, we all love to travel. But being a student, especially if you’re studying abroad, means that you can’t really spend extravagantly. Thankfully, living in Stockholm we don’t have to spend too much to get an amazing vacation! So pack your bags and let’s go!

We just had Easter break here in Sweden. And that meant we got a week off from our schedule! So, a few of my friends and I wanted to go on a trip! And we went to Riga, Latvia! We took a cruise to get there and return back! And it cost about the same as a week’s grocery shopping budget to go on this trip. Yup, you read that right! Not only was the trip really cost efficient, it was an amazing experience as well! The trip on the cruise, with the parties, the dancing, the cool breeze… the life on deck was as much fun as being in Latvia itself! And as a student of Civil engineering, let me tell you, the architecture in Riga is very unique! You can see a classical blend of  Art Nouveau styled architecture and modern architecture all over the city! Here are some postcards from my trip to Riga!

Just like Riga, you can get to Estonia, Mariehamn and few other cities and  countries on a cruise as well!

And there are other places  and cities around Stockholm that you can travel for using just your SL (Public transport card). You can go to Sigtuna for the perfect weekend getaway or you can go to Uppsala to kickback and have a lazy weekend. In the summer, you could go to Norrtälje, which is a popular summer destination for many Swedes!

So when you’re tired from all those late nights, working on assignments and projects and cramming for exams, take a small break to go to some amazing places and rejuvenate!

-For now, your Swe-Desi seafarer signing off! 🙂
