Halloween Sittning

Swedish Halloween Sittning

The new era of the Swedish Halloween Sittning is here to stay.

Halloween has always been the holiday where you get all dressed up and go ‘trick or treating’.

As a child, your parents would dress you however they thought was cutest and when you grew older they made you look like the coolest superhero or weird character you wanted to be that year.

But with age comes the burden of picking a great costume, putting all the pieces together and hoping everyone immediately understands your thinking behind it.

Halloween Sittning

This year the Studdentgruppen Globala at my University decided to throw a Halloween party called a sittning.

A Sittning in Finland and Sweden refers to ‘a dinner arranged by a student union or a nation that is usually held in a hall with a given dress code and involves lots of singing and eating and drinking’. Toasts are made by the Toastmaster and the guests sit at long tables known as långbords.

In our case, we had a booklet with the “Sittning rules” and the songs for the night. Here are a few of the funniest rules:

A two course meal was served all while we were trying to decipher each other’s costumes. There was a great number of songs. This one was even created just for the event:

“Melodi: Idas sommarvisa.

Du ska inte tro du blir lullig

ifall inte nån sätter fart

På sittning och blir lite dimmig

i blicken la-lalala”

Best costume went to the male Maleficent:

I on the other hand went as a voodoo priestess inspired by the voodoo cult in 007’s Live and Let Die. I found some feathers from a deceased bird (rip) outside my flat thanks to the first snowfall that was on the same day.

My friends Anita and Ekin went as No face and a Panda respectively.

The make-up prep was the most fun I’ve had dressing up in a long time and boy was it worth it. Putting effort into your costume does pay off. You get some great pictures as well as some great memories.

I hope you all had a Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween

Looking forward to your great costumes for next year!

Sittning: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

sittning (“sitting”, often shortened to sits or sitzFinnishsitsit) is in Sweden and Finland a seated meal held within a set time frame. In restaurants it may refer to a seating, i.e. the time given for a crowd to have their meal. The term is also used to denote the part of a party that is a seated meal. Though it can refer to any kind of meal, it is often used to refer to a student sittning.

Anyhow… here are some songs you can start learning for next year 🙂

Playlist while you read:

Livet är härligt,

Tavaritj vårt liv är härligt.

Vi alla våra små bekymmer glömmer,

när vi har fått en tår på tand en skål.

Ta dig en Vodka,

Tavaritj en liten Vodka.

Glasen i botten vi tillsammans tömmer,

det kommer mera efter hand.

En viking vill ha livets vann,

hurra, hurra!

Den hastigt i mitt svalg försvann,

hurra, hurra!

Till kalv, till oxe, till fisk, till fläsk,

när alla kärringar vill ha läsk,

då vill alla vikingar ha en bäsk!

När bäsken småningom är slut,

tragik, tragik!

A Swedish version of…

Hell and Gore

Hell and gore,

chung hop Father Allan, Allan lay

Hell and gore,

chung hop Father Allan lay!

And handsome in the Hell and tare

hand eller in the half and fore.

Hell and gore …. (drink!)

chung hop Father Allan lay!

Härjarevisan with translation.

Ja, för nu ska vi ut och härja,

supa och slåss och svärja,

bränna röda stugor, slå små barn

och säga fula ord.

Med blod ska vi stäppen färga;

nu änteligen lär jag kunna

dra nå’n riktig nytta

av min Hermodskurs i mord.

In English:

Yes, now we’re going out to ravage,

drink and fight and swear!

Burn red cottages, hit small children

and say bad words.

We’ll color the steppe with blood.

Now I will finally

make good use

of my correspondence course in murder.

Not exactly the right song, but good tune:

We’re Swedish, We’re Swedish

We’re Swedish, we’re Swedish, we’re far ’way from home

We drink and we fuck and we live all alone

If the ocean was whiskey and I was a duck

I’d swim to the bottom and drink it all up

But the ocean’s not whiskey, and I’m not a duck

So I’ll go back to Sweden to drink and to fuck.

Cannot find the video on YouTube (can you believe that?)

Lille sup

Lille sup, lille sup

Lille söte supen

Nu ska du, nu ska du

Ner igenom strupen

Drunken Sailor

What shall we do with the drunken sailor,

What shall we do with the drunken sailor,

What shall we do with the drunken sailor,

Early in the morning.

Hooray and up she rises

Hooray and up she rises

Hooray and up she rises

Early in the morning.

Put him in a longboat ’til he’s sober…

Pull out the plug and wet him all over…

Put him in the scuppers with a hose-pipe on him…

Heave him by the leg in a running bowlin’…

Shave his head with a rusty razor…

Put him in the bed with the captain’s daughter…

That’s we’ll do the drunken sailor…

The sun is going up and down

The sun is going up and down

Doo da, doo da

I will never drink again

Hey doo da dey

Hey doo da dey, hey doo da dey

I will never drink again

Hey doo da dey

But… That was just a lie I told

Doo da, doo da

Tomorrow I will do the same

Hey doo da dey

Hey doo da dey, hey doo da dey

Tomorrow I will do the same

This is not the right video, but it is filmed in Göteborg and it is funny as hell!

Sorry for the long post!

Guide in Borås – To See, To Shop, To Eat and To Do!

Hello and welcome all new students to the University of Borås. Borås may not be too far off from buzzing Gothenburg but there are lots of activities going on both in the university and in town which are pretty exciting. Below are a few activities to kick-start.

To See

No Limit Street Art – An outdoor art event uniting artists from around the world by turning public space into an outdoor exhibition. Started in 2014, it was also the first street art curated in Sweden. FREE guided tours every weekend from September 12th to October 25th or use this map to experience No Limit Street Art on your own.

Borås Zoo – One of Sweden’s biggest and most modern zoos with a fusion of African savannah and Nordic wildlife, set in large and natural surroundings. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit the zoo for FREE during the introduction week. Here are some of the photos I took at the zoo.

Textile Museum – Showcases different modern and innovative exhibitions. Located in The Swedish School of Textiles, it is open to public and FREE for students from University of Borås. Check out Lars Wallin’s Fashion Stories exhibition and other exhibitions at the museum.

To Eat

Orangeriet – Cosy cafe/meeting place set in the heart of Borås with great ecological food and drinks. Not only that, there are also seminars open to the public. An upcoming FREE lecture by professor Bodil Jönsson ‘Om Tid’ will be held on 22nd September. Another nice cafe opposite Orangeriet is Viskan, famous for their cheesecake and weekend brunch.

EEST – Fancy a sushi buffet for lunch? For 100Kr, you get sushi + Chinese/Thai style buffet with drinks. Students get additional 5% discount with student card.

Jensen’s Bofhus – Pretty reasonable prices for lunch menu. Chicken fillet main course at 69Kr , ribs at 89Kr and steak from 119kr.

To Shop

Knalleland – Shopping center with over 100 boutiques, cafes and restaurants. One of my favourite shops over there is Lagerhaus which sells pretty stationery and home decorative items.

Myrorna – There are several second hand shops in Borås and this is one of my favourite from vintage clothes, to DVDs and household items. Good prices and good for the environment.

The Wardrobe – Here at the Textile Fashion Center lies the clothes library where you borrow clothes instead of books. It’s also a place for local designers to showcase their items where you can also borrow them. Better still, you can also revamp your wardrobe by giving them a new life here.

To Do

Too much to DO! Student organization, ESN Borås, keeps you really pack with all the crazy fun activities. With the upcoming International Dinner on 20 Sep, Copenhagen trip on 10-11 Oct, Russian Trip in late Oct, ESN Sea Battle and Lappland Trip in Nov, there’s just so much going on. Tickets also sell fast, so act fast.

You can also check out the events in Borås here. Want an experience of Borås arty essence? Then don’t miss the upcoming Sculpture and Street Art Walking and City as Gallery FREE guided tours in mid September and October. For those who prefer action, the upcoming running/race Cycle of Borås event on 19 September might just be what you are looking for.

Not to mention, there are so many ongoing sittning, that is, themed dinner parties, organized by different organizations that are not to be missed. Time flies quickly when you are having fun. Although packed with never ending assignments, my first year in Borås was also filled with many ‘outside classroom’ activities. The first year flew by and trust me, bidding farewells were not easy but I’m so thankful to meet so many wonderful people and made so many good friends from around the world. A good reason for travelling everywhere.
