<div>Before coming here, I spend too much of my time worrying about things that now I realize I didn't needed to. When you start doing your application, the pressure is enough and you already have too much to worry about. There's always that simple but disturbing thoughts before applying or coming to a different country, like the fear of not making friends or don't communicate very well for example.<p></p>
<p>So, to stop you from worring for nothing, I will tell you a few small things you don't need to stress about before thinking about coming to a University in Sweden.</p></div>

<ul><li><strong>"What if I make lots of english mistakes?"</strong></li></ul>



<div>This is a question that (almost) everyone that does not have english as first language ask themselves. But don't worry about making mistakes or forgeting some words! Honestly, this happens to everyone and here, when people know you're from another country they totally understand some mistakes. And there's the fact that here in Sweden english is also the second language, so they totally understand small mistakes and forgeting some words.</div>

<ul><li><strong>"What if I have a strong cultural shock?"</strong></li></ul>



<div>This is why Sweden is an awesome choice! The culture is rich, full of interesting foods and habits. But at the same time is an open culture that people want to show to the foreigns, giving them a really good experience with their country. The Swedes are always inviting people for fikas and talking about cultural differences, integrating people and respecting the differences. So no need to worry about this!</div>

<ul><li><strong>"What if I don't understand the classes?"</strong></li></ul>



<div>This is something that I asked myself before coming here and..... total waste of time. The Professors here try their best to make everything clear, asking all the time if there are any questions or if someone did not understand, especially if they have international students in class. You can ask questions in class, set an appointment with the professor or counselor and of course, send an email about everything you don't understand. So, no worries!</div>

<ul><li>"<strong>What if I don't make any friends?"</strong></li></ul>



<div>This could be a very stupid question, but I did myself and I bet some of you will or already did. The thing you have to remember is: everyone is in the same position as you. If you meet international students you will know that they feel the same thing as you, everything is new, they want to connect and have good friends, so you just have to be open to start some conversations and there you go! And swedish people are very friendly, so you are not going to be alone!<p></p>
<p>I'm sure there is more "What Ifs" that will go through your mind, it is totally normal. You just have to keep in mind that studying abroad, especially in Sweden (;)) is an awesome adventure and small worries about the future should not stop you from coming. I thought about all of these questions and decided to come anyway. And you know what? That was the best decision of my life!</p>

"What ifs" you do not need to worry about before coming to Sweden

<p>Science... We are all here to contribute to science as we study in Sweden. Whether we are a master student or a Ph.D. student, there is only one basis for our studying abroad. It is our primary goal to offer new information to mankind or to learn how to use effectively the knowledge that mankind previously produced. So far, what do you think scientists living in Sweden (Swedish or world citizens) have contributed to science? The answer is very clear: they have made enormous contributions after countless scientific research and observation.</p>



<p>Undoubtedly they also succeeded in making us laugh with strange but scientifically proven observations as well. I have gathered five strange, interesting, and scientifically proven facts from the Swedish academic world. If you have such knowledge, you can share it as a comment.</p>



<ol><li><em><strong>For men who eat chocolate once a week, the risk of a heart attack is lower.</strong></em></li></ol>



<p>A Swedish research group have studied 37,000 men between 49 and 75 years of age for 10 years. During the research, there were 2000 heart attack crises among the sample, but the chocolate eaters were more robust. The reason for this is that the flavanoid named substance in chocolate has lowered cholesterol and balances blood pressure.</p>

<ol start="2"><li><em><strong>Cheating is hormonal.</strong></em></li></ol>



<p>In 2008, Swedish scientists, who were bothered to do what they were doing, discovered that vasopressin is the hormone which causes cheating. The research was done in a lab observing the distinction between monogamous field mice and other “immoral mice”. They then looked at the RS3 334 gene on 552 people who found that if the hormone was missing or the double, it was more likely to deceive. The good news is you can make hormone supplements.</p>

<ol start="3"><li><em><strong>Vitamin D deficiency causes suicide</strong></em></li></ol>



<p>According to the research done by Lund University and MSU, the lack of vitamin D in the research could lead to suicide attempts.</p>

<ol start="4"><li><em><strong>Those who are living closer to an airport are becoming paunchier.</strong></em></li></ol>



<p>According to a group of Swedish researchers, the famous researcher Charlotte Eriksson included, the sound is 5 decibels higher around airports; and people living close to an airport are 1.5 cm thicker. The main reason for this is the stress that the voice causes. The results of this experiment on 5,000 people living in Stockholm have also been published in Environmental Health Perspectives.</p>

<ol start="5"><li><em><strong>You may be dragging people into death when you break their hearths.</strong></em></li></ol>



<p>Yrsa Sverrisdottir and her team found ‘broken heart syndrome’ in their research focusing on people who have broken hearts between 2009 and 2011. They have proven that hearth muscles of sad people are getting tired of pumping blood and is causing many diseases including death.</p>

5 Weird but Scientifically Proven Facts from Swedish Universities and Scientists

<p>When people look for a bachelor's, master or a PhD abroad , Sweden is not always the first option. Australia, France, Germany, England, Japan, US, Canada, Switzerland (a lot of people asked me if I was studying in Sweden or in Switzerland HAHAHA! - both are pronounced in a similar way in spanish), and many more are popular destinations for students. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that all those countries are great places for studying, and it depends a lot on what you like. But let me give you <strong>3 non-academic reasons why Sweden is THE best country to study.<br>

<h2>#1 Innovation</h2>



<p>Let's start with one of the most important reasons. Did you knew that Stockholm is one of the cities with more startups per capita? Now, what the heck does this mean. Right now you might be listening to music in one of the most important and recent ones - Spotify! Or maybe you are listening to <a href="https://blogs.studyinsweden.se/2016/12/15/podcast-episode-2-sweden-coffee/?student_author=editegarjane">Edite's amazing podcast</a> (I definitely recommend you to listen to it) or playing Candy Crush, the list keeps going but you get the point right? Anyway, in Sweden there is a constant development in terms of technology, there is a lot going on and this is definitely the place to be if you are an entrepreneur, even if you think that starting a bushiness is hard, funding may be available via VINNOVA, Sweden's innovation agency.</p>

<h2>#2 Sustainable</h2>



<p>Sweden is well known around the world for being an eco-friendly country, not just because how their waste-management abilities. But also because the educational system teaches people how it is possible to reduce the environmental footprint of humans. I remember an article about "Sweden buying garbage", and my first thought was - why would someone buy trash? - but I kept reading anyway.</p>



<p>As a result of this sustainable culture and education, people recycle so well that they don't have enough rubbish to incinerate to produce energy. In fact, 99% of Swedens waste is now recycled (for all of you people interested in sustainable and environmental topics, Sweden offers a lot of programmes related to sustainability) how cool is that! Sweden has become Europe's biggest importer of trash from other countries.</p>



<p>Another thing that I notice is that people often tend to buy "local" products, and the main reason for this is: first, to support the local companies, and local producers, but also, to reduce the emissions. How come? Well, if you consume local products the transportation (trucks, airplanes, ships) for those products has a smaller impact since less fuel is burned to move the products around the world. Easy.</p>



<p>I could spend days talking about Sweden's sustainable culture, there's research going on that I don't even understand, and definitely there is a lot of development going around here.</p>

<h2>#3 Employment</h2>



<p>A lot of people ask me if I would like to stay in Sweden, and the answer is simple - YES! - Explaining why is the tricky part (or at least for me). Let me beging with the fact that NO ONE will give you a job out of nowhere, if there is one sentence that sums perfectly how I feel about life is this one: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity". So far I can't complain about the opportunities that I have created and my talent has allowed me to take - I feel like I'm giving a speech in an award ceremony or something like that, but let's just get back to the point.</p>



<p>Sweden has a lot to offer, companies are looking for new talent everywhere, and the opportunities to mingle and talk with future employers are many. Job fairs, lunch-seminars, lunch-lectures, fika with companies, academic tours through the facilities, thesis projects within a company, internships, summer jobs, guest lecturers, and so on. Honestly I don't know what to expect, and this is just my perspective of what I see and what I've heard, Gimmy perfectly sums up <a href="https://blogs.studyinsweden.se/2016/02/28/vcc/?student_author=gimmy-liu">everything you need to know in your job hunt</a>.</p>
